Car ferries run hourly and sometimes half hourly from Portsmouth and Lymington, operated by Wightlink and from Southampton by Red Funnel. Foot passengers can cross by catamaran from: Portsmouth Harbour (near the train station) to Ryde Pier (Wightlink), Southampton (Town quay docks - a 10 minute bus ride from Southampton Central station) to West Cowes (Red Funnel), or by Hovercraft from Portsmouth Southsea to Ryde Esplanade (Hovertravel). Southern Vectis operate a bus services around the Island including a rover ticket which gives unlimited travel on the Island bus network. You can go where you like, when you like, change buses as often as you like, wherever you like. Niton is between Whitwell and Blackgang Chine.

International travel

The closest airports are Southampton and Bournemouth. A car journey from Southampton Airport to Red Funnel at Southampton Docks is about 30 minutes Southampton Airport to Wightlink at Lymington is about 40 minutes Bournemouth Airport to Red Funnel at Southampton Docks is about 45 minutes Bournemouth Airport to Wightlink at Lymington is about 40 minutes. Gatwick airport is about 1¾ hours by car to Portsmouth and Southampton. [Raillink] Heathrow is about 1¼ hours from Portsmouth and Southampton. The two main English Channel car crossings are from Calais to Dover Harbour by various ferry companies and to Folkstone by tunnel.  Onward car journeys to Portsmouth and Southampton should take between 2 and 3 hours. Brittany Ferries sail to Portsmouth from Caen, St Malo and Cherburg in France and Santander in Spain P& O Ferries have a service between Bilbao in France and Portsmouth The channel tunnel exit at Folkstone is 2½ hours from Portsmouth.
