Driving Directions

Island roads are different:  most drivers are careful and excessively deferential which you will enjoy after the rush of the Mainland, provided you can "chill out" first!  There is only one dual carriageway (known with not just a hint of irony as "the Motorway") and satellite navigation systems can sometimes mislead or direct you through a cow yard, or down a single track lane towards a large rural bus or tractor!  The following is a summary of the route to the cottage from each of the car ferry terminals on the Island  Portsmouth-Fishbourne ferry Wightlink Ferry at Fishbourne When you alight from the ferry go to the end of the road and turn right towards Newport. You will go through Wootton village and up to traffic lights at the Cedars pub. Go straight on towards Newport.  When you arrive in Newport (about 10 mins from the ferry) keep in the left lane and at the traffic lights stay left, signed towards Sandown. Follow that road for a mile or so and turn right just after Mole Country Stores store towards Ventnor.  Stay on that road for about 2 miles to Rookley and turn right at the green, opposite the post office, signposted to Niton.  Keep on the same road over Bleak Down all the way to Niton.   Rock Cottage from the roadWhen you arrive at the village, drive down the hill into the village and follow the road straight on, past Norris's village stores and the White Lion pub,  past the Post Office straight on up the hill and down the other side.  There is a sharp left bend by the  garage, follow the road around to the left and take the right turn onto St Catherine's Road (signpost to the Buddle Inn and the lighthouse).   The road loops around to the right after the Buddle Inn; keep going to the right, past the Enchanted Manor hotel.  Rock Cottage is tucked away down to the right of the road after the little s-bend up the hill.   There is parking on the garden hard standing down the little lane (on the right just after the cottage) or you can park in the field opposite the green garden gates. Red Funnel ferry at East Cowes Safe journey. Southampton – East Cowes ferry When you get off the ferry go straight on over the mini roundabout past Waitrose and up the hill. Keep going up the hill and round – you will pass the entrance to Osborne House on the left - and keep going to a mini roundabout. Turn left (right is to an industrial estate) and keep going until you get to a large roundabout (about a mile). Turn right towards Newport.   When you arrive in Newport go straight on towards Sandown. The road takes you down a hill to a big roundabout with traffic lights. Keep in the left lane and at the traffic lights stay left, signed towards Sandown. When you arrive at the village, drive down the hill into the village and follow the road straight on, past Norris's village stores and the White Lion pub,  past the Post Office straight on up the hill and down the other side.  There is a sharp left bend by the  garage, follow the road around to the left and take the right turn onto St Catherine's Road (signpost to the Buddle Inn and the lighthouse).   The road loops around to the right after the Buddle Inn, keep going to the right, past the Enchanted Manor hotel.  Rock Cottage is tucked away down to the right of the road after the little s-bend up the hill.   There is parking on the garden hard standing down the little lane (on the right just after the cottage) or you can park in the field opposite the green garden gates. Go along that road (which is really bumpy) for about 2km until you reach a T- junction and turn left. Keep on that road for about 5km until you come to a long straight part that goes downhill. Turn right half way down. It is signed for Brook. You will pass Chessell pottery on the left (which is open to the public) and continue towards Brook.
